Knavecon Love Letter Auditions

I’m going to do up a custom Love Letter Deck for Knavecon. The various roles on the cards will be replaced with pictures of gamers. SO here’s what I want. The roles as you may know are

Handmaiden

I want you to submit a photo of yourself photoshopped or cosplayed to one or more of the roles above. The best ones will be used for this con’s Love Letter Deck a number of which will be printed and played with and given out as prizes on the day.

Star Realms Gambit – The Verdict

Gambit is the first electronic expansion for star realms. They really hit it out of the park with Star Realms. It’s a great great game and works so well electronically.

Gambit on the other hand is a minor enhancement. It adds a little but not a huge amount to a the base game. It’s certainly not essential to your enjoyment of the game

I’ve had it for a few weeks now and it’s fun but really compared to what you get for your money with the base game it’s small beer. I’ve waited a few weeks before I gave my opinion and it hasn’t changed.

Star realms itself is a stupendous game, it’s so much more than the sum of its parts. Gambit doesn’t add enough to recommend it. If you’ve had your fill of vanilla star realms then it could be worth a look. If you’re a die hard fan chances are you’ve already in game purchased it and are now wondering what you could have done with that 3.99 you burnt

There’s another few expansions coming down the tracks and those I’m looking forward to. Until then don’t bother, just like octodad it’s a damp squid…..

Cards against Humanity Mega Game

a Big game of Cards against humanity has become a tradition at Knavecon. Once we’ve entered the terminal phase of the con where young ninjas are safely tucked away, grog has been piped and a more robust turn of phrase is abroad, out comes CAH. This year we’re going to freshen things up by adding the five expansions to the game which should be winging their way to Knavecon central as we speak.

If you’re easily offended make sure to join this game on the night.

Dr Phil in the house

I regularly get slagged off for playing inappropriate music at games nights. Even though Knavecon can be a noisy affair I always thought it lacked music, so rather than subject the gamers to my Excellent taste in music I’m bringing in a professional. Say hello to Big Phil. Phil Wade is a veteran DJ who regularly plays in Limerick and as a gamer himself is perfectly placed to produce the ambient atmosphere and background music the con deserves.

This is going to be a hell of a day!

Boardgame Café Dublin

I had the pleasure of talking to Carla recently from the Board Game House Café in Dublin. Carla and her husband Bruno are avid board game fans and are setting up a board game café in Dublin. They’re pretty close to completion and are finalising a location (possibly in Capel street) which should see 40-50 people seated in comfort, gaming and professionally coffeed.

The guys hail from Brazil where boardgame cafes (and I would assume coffee) are a common occurrence. The idea would be for people to drop in, have refreshments and if they want to game pay a small fee to gain access to their large game library (I’m envious of some of the games they have on offer). The fee will be used to maintain and add to the games they have. They’ll have on hand game gurus to take people through the rules which is a fantastic idea.

So, coffee, boardgames and a relaxed atmosphere, it doesn’t get much better than that (a bit like Knavecon!).

I’m going to visiting them in the next few weeks for their opening and I wish them the very best with their new, wonderful, venture

Cool Cats in the house – Black Kat Games

Black Kat Games will be joining us for the first time at Knavecon this year and they mean business! They’re going to be running two events on the day.

Black Kat are a really active games centre in Kilkenny and stock a great range of games and run some damn fine competitions.

I caught up with the lads in Kilkenny a month back and we spend a very pleasant afternoon shooting the breeze. Anyhoe.

I’m delighted to announce that they will be running the Nationals for Settlers of Catan at Knavecon this year, the winners of which will qualify for entry to the UK and from there to the US ! This is the real deal, win in the UK and you’ll be flown to the States to partake in the world finals.

Catan will kick off at 11AM

The second Competition is going to be DICE MASTERS. They’re going to run a rainbow draft on the day and this will start at 3PM

Things are hotting up!

Knavecon Ninjas are go !

Knavecon V is going to see the launch of “Knavecon Ninjas”. We’re setting aside a small area where we’re going to invite younger gamers from 6-12 to learn gaming with us. We’ll have a stack of games on hand suited to the younger player and someone to teach both Ninjas and Parents how to play them.

The event will run from 12 noon until 4 pm and Ninjas and Parents are free to jump in and out as they please.
