Invasion of the Baggins Snatchers! – an Oldhammer Presentation

IotBS_promo_01

I’m REALLY excited about this.  MrSaturday and the oldhammer crew are running a participation game. Let me step out of the way and let the man speak…

The Oldhammer group will be running a participation skirmish game at KnaveCon 3, a 4 player competitive/cooperative/whatever ye like yerself raid in which rival fimir warbands have come across a sleepy halfling village ripe for the plucking. Each warband is desperate to take more than it’s share of plunder and captives back to it’s mist-shrouded home, and they must make sure to grab as much loot as they can before the halflings mysterious protectors arrive to spoil the party…

“Dirach Grunsgul stepped out from the cloying mists surrounded the wyrdstone and regarded the halfling settlement with a mixture of joy and disbelief. How had such an apparently defenceless village survived this long? He could see pens of sheep, stacks of corn and fat pigs amongst the small houses. There wasn’t even a defensive wall surrounding the place. He shook his head in wonder. Close by, another fimir group emerged from the morning fog. It must be Murdach and his raiders thought Grunsgul. He turned to Goll and his warriors and gave them the signal to attack. Presently the screaming began. The huge fianna fimm Odhran’s face wrinkled into a toothy grin, and he hefted his mace and plodded after the others.

The clan would eat well tonight.”

The Coffee Has Landed!

pon

I’m delighted to announce that Pónaire Coffee will once again be the official coffee supplier for Knavecon.   Based locally in Annacotty these guys know their beans.

The other thing people remember about the last Knavecon was the coffee, fresh, strong and sharp (just like myself boom boom).  I dropped into the guys at the weekend to pick up a Large batch of coffee for next weekend they’d been specially roasting for the event.  I just finished a few cups of it and I have to say it most definitely passes muster.

We’ll be serving Pónaire coffee all day Saturday so your sleep is now invalid.  Make it your business to call into us in the Kilmurray lodge on the 1st March.  Even if you can’t stay for gaming, drop in, have a GOOD coffee and a look around.  See you on the day.

The Gathering Limerick coming to Knavecon

gath

“It wouldn’t be a party without the Gathering” (C)

We’re delighted to announce (as if you didn’t know already) that The Gathering Limerick will be once again at Knavecon.  Gary and the lads will be there not least of all to defend their honor against Dungeons and Donuts in the big Shop v Shop Netrunner throw down.

The Gathering is one of the oldest game shops in the country.  It’s been a bedrock of gaming in the west for longer than I care to remember and it’s gone from strength to strength over the years.

photo 1

The Gathering is a treasure trove of all things gaming, boardgames, card games, collectibles, Warhammer, Books, Horby, Airfix kits, GW, Paints, Gaming Paraphernalia, you name it the lads have it or can get it for you.

photo 2

As always the guys are bringing something to the party so if you’re interested in trying out The Game of Thrones Living card game, they’re going to be doing demos of it all day.  Better still they’re running a Store Championship the next day after Knavecon in the shop.

These sanctioned events by Fantasy Flight are something special.  If you’re a collector it’s the only place you can get some unique game items

If you’re in Limerick make it your business to call to the guys, it’s always worth a trip in not least to shoot the breeze and find out what’s running in the shop.  There’s ALWAYS something running in the shop.

An Occasional Good Idea – Gaming Tokens

Occasionally I come up with a good idea, you’ll have to be patient another one isn’t due for a while….

photo (21)

A lot of boardgames we play have coins in them. Usually (with the exception of Age of Empires III) with cheap nasty cardboard coins or worse still flimsy paper notes.  I can’t be doing with it.  If I’m going to cough up coin for something in a game I want something solid. So here was my plan

I wanted to get a set of coins, metal ones I could re-use in any game.  It struck me that there are some really funky real world currencies out there, some with holes in them (check the pic) and some with eagles but unfortunately no dragons (that I know of).

My constraints were

  1. Had to be Cheap
  2. be Cool looking
  3. and be Cheap

I put a post on boardgamegeek and a few people suggested using Mexican or Japanese coins.  I was very impressed with BGG, within a short time I had hooked up with someone in Toyko who said he’d send me a stack of coins fresh from the bank in exchange for boring old euros.  The exchange rate it very low for Yen.

As it turned out getting money to him was difficult so I got him something else, a set of replacement meeples for a game he had and lo and behold true to his word a stack of yen arrived today.

It’s PERFECT for gaming currency, looks funky, isn’t too heavy but has that nice authentic money feel to it.

A Study in Emerald at Knavecon

sie-cover-1

If you haven’t read Neil Gaiman’s short story “A Study in Emerald” I advise you to do it right now… I’ll wait….

Click to access emerald.pdf

It’s Cthulhu meets Sherlock Holmes with a fantastic slant on things.

Neil Gaiman teamed up with Martin Wallace to produce a game based on the short story and I’m hoping a copy of it will be dropping in my door before Knavecon and we’ll all get a chance to play it.  From all accounts it’s fantastic!

Delving Thur – Being a Drax Report

Mini Me-2

Hello Group, I’m an evil overlord

Hello Victor !

I guess it all started with Avon from Blakes 7 then Darth Vader and before I knew it I couldn’t stop trying to bend people to my will.

It’s a textbox story but I digress….

It was Thur night and we decided (well I decided) we would have another pop at Descent, having gone to the trouble of painting a few of the models and more carefully reading the rules.  Someone had to be the evil overlord and funny enough I jumped at the chance.  Being the evil character is always more fun in games.  it’s more fun to be a werewolf in werewolf, Dracula in Fury of Dracula, Jack the Ripper in Letters from Whitechapel, the list goes on.

Descent unlike say Dungeons and Dragons is a competitive game. The overlord is actively trying to murder the adventurers not entertain them.  We played the first scenario “The Fat Goblin”, there was a small group of adventurers and here’s where I found the first flaw in Descent.  It sometimes doesn’t scale well.  From the off the good guys were under pressure.  Goblins were half inching the crops, spiders were harrying them, dice we’re betraying them it was a hard slog and things went from bad to really really bad in the second half

Descent adventures are played in two halves, act 1 and 2.  The second being tougher than the first.  In this case armed with

  1. Years of experience as being and evil overlord
  2. A relatively new group of gamers
  3. A slightly broken scenario
  4. a better command of the rules
  5. Tips on how to be Ireland’s next top Overlord

I wreeked havoc in the second act

The game doesn’t allow for the adventurers to die, they get knocked out and can recover, HOWEVER if an evil overlord wedges them in a spot with say oh I don’t know a Shadow Dragon and bunch of Poisonous giant spiders and just hammers them into unconsciousness every turn, they’ve had their chips and it’s an early shower for the party.  That’s what happened.  They we’re too small a bunch and they were overpowered early on.  So much so that the Fat Goblin in the scenario could swan about and complete his evil plans without the unwelcome attentions of the adventurers.  Game Set and Match to the Evil Overlord.  Evil Chuckle.

I’ve since checked into this and it seems this scenario is the one in the whole game that doesn’t work well with a small group.  It’s just unfortunate we had to pick it and I do hope we revisit the world of Descent again soon, it’s too good a game to be consigned to the shelf of no return.

Next up was a game I’ve successfully avoided playing for a long time

Agricola

I don’t particularly have a problem with this game, I did play it briefly once and it made some sort of sense to me.  Having played a few other games since it now reminds me a bit of Lords of Waterdeep and maybe Farmsville 🙂  No that’s unfair it’s a fine game.  It rates very highly in BGG and it is fun to play but I need to play it a good bit more before I get my head around it

That said… I did WIN the game with my limited knowledge of it but my insistence on blocking the most experience player whenever possible.

Agricola is a worker placement’s worker placement game.  It couldn’t be more work placement  if it tried.  The game starts with each player having a small holding (oh err missus) and slowing trying to increase the size and composition of their farm to score points.  A dozen or so locations on the map allow you to gain resources and spent resources to improve your farm.  As the game progresses more and more options open up and it’s a juggle between feeding your family and improving your lot.  Eat the cows? Upgrade your house to Stone? Build an oven?  While this is going on everyone else is doing the same.   The interaction comes when someone takes a space that you desperately needed that turn.

We played the standard game without the extra cards but all in all it’s a solid game, very playable.  Personally I’m more of a direct attack sort of person but this is fine.  If you want a bit of both btw I highly recommend Wealth of Nations with the War Clouds expansion

Then is was all over bar the banter

More of that soon

Dungeons and Donuts

dd1

I had the pleasure last weekend of a long overdue visit to Dungeons and Donuts in Galway.  What a Fantastic spot !

As you probably know  D+D will be appearing at Knavecon once again.  Anyone who was at the last one will well remember D+D.  I consider myself a bit of a donut connoisseur and I can honestly say hand on heart there is no finer donut to be had in the country.  I kid you not.

dd2

D+D Galway is a very cosy, laid back, friendly spot.  There’s a fine selection of Boardgames, cardgames, warhammer and hobby paraphernalia on sale.  There’s also a nice selection of library games there, I spotted a few classics like Heroquest and Relic.

What I really like about the place is the atmosphere.  When I arrived the owner was relaxing and enjoying a game of Waterdeep with the customers and shooting the breeze.  This is what gaming and Knavecon are all about.  No-one was there to hassle you or push sales on you.    I grabbed a coffee and a donut and I perused the shelves, chatted with a few of the lads and left happy and satisfied.

The guys have got a great thing going on in Galway, they have a brillant gaming area and a well attended gaming club.  I’m only sorry I couldn’t stay to game with them.  If you find yourself in Galway, make it your business to call to them.   I understand Ronan is hard at work on a signature Knavecon Donut……

Ronan : “So how many donuts will you need for Knavecon?”

Victor : “All of them Ronan, ALL OF THEM”
